I’ve noticed a new theme afoot in Philadelphia. Littering! Although it’s not novel. Instead, it feels like a reprise of an old nationwide epidemic in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Back then, America was in the throes of her Vietnam initiative, and sinking national pride had become a contagion. When people don’t take pride in their country, they tend to treat it poorly and thoughtlessly. I work at a strip mall. The parking lot has become an area where people feel entitled to empty the contents of their cars: balled-up fast food bags, Wawa and Dunkin Donuts coffee cups, beer bottles and cans, vape pens, condoms, and hard-pick dental floss. Hell, if you’re gonna litter, do it with clean teeth. No self-respecting person should litter with a sliver of Arby’s roast beef stuck in their teeth. For shame!
Okay, I get it: If you’re MAGA, you don’t like living in Wokestan, and if you’re “woke,” you don’t like living in Magastan, and both factions are looking for ways to spite one another. But that doesn’t give either malcontent the right to use Philadelphia’s parking lots as their personal dumping grounds. Drive your trash home and put it in your can!
