An epic novel takes time to absorb, so reading it over and over again, irrespective of its literary prowess, linguistics, and message, could end up feeling like a chore. There are a few novels I’ve read multiple times, A Prayer for Owen Meany among them, but it was over a period of years, decades in fact. But “over and over again” suggests a companion novel, something that remains with you to help center your equilibrium when necessary or share with a loved one or child. If that’s the case, then only one book comes to mind: The Giving Tree, by Shel Silverstein. It’s a gem that’s comparable to ice cream; I could eat it every day.
This was a terrible short blog, but I have a good excuse: the Phillies are on the West Coast, and I was up to 1:00 a.m. watching them get shutout 6-0. So I’m not my usual sunshiny self. 😒
