“Testing, testing, 1,2,3. Pardon us, folks-you lovely people for whom America’s polity exists; in case you hadn’t noticed, we’re in another election cycle, and we wanted to make sure the microphones are open and working so you don’t miss a single word. Wait. What’s that you say? We Americans live in a perpetual election cycle, and the cycle generates its own weather system, creating a vortex into which all the world’s rot and raw sewage gets sucked.
“But wait; haven’t you all heard? This new band of office seekers plans to take on the billionaires and special interests! And this time, these newbies really mean it!”
“Ahh, they really mean it, do they?” the crowd echoed. “And have these “newbies” explained this process to the billionaires and special interests? Moreover, have you asked this new band of aspirants who’s funding their campaigns?”
Aaaaannnnnnnnd cut. End farce.
I don’t know the exact year that Politics and Money exchanged their nuptials. But here’s what I do know: One of them should have had enough sense and foresight to turn the other into Miss Havisham, a woman left at the altar, doomed to live out her days as a fully-attired bride with no groom. But neither did. Instead, they went forth knowing it would be a corrupt marriage with no possibility of a divorce. And what of the children of this marriage? Like the Dickens character Pip, as long as the world dangles Estella, he will always have Great Expectations.
