The Sweet Spot

Daily writing prompt
Are you a lifelong learner?

Everyone is curious. Some more than others. If you are a curious type, you’re a “lifelong learner” by default. Except for the cat. Curiosity did a real number on that poor bastard. Trust me, the cat’s not learning too much nowadays; his lesson was what you call a real one-and-done session.

I, too, had my struggles with curiosity. Did it threaten my life? No, but it did leave me unsatisfied. For example, when I once asked the question, “Why does ‘aardvark’ begin with two As?” I received the terse reply, “Because it does.” That, as you could well imagine, was not especially helpful.

Later, when posing the poignant question, “How is God everywhere?” I was promptly told, “Because He is.”

It just goes to show you that faith and intellectual curiosity are mutually exclusive. However, there may be a sweet spot where they intersect. Moreover, if you’re lucky enough to land on that sweet spot and look around, I bet you’ll find a live cat explaining to a perplexed aardvark why he has two As, and a forgiving God who doesn’t mind a healthy dash of skepticism.

“I don’t what to tell you, fella, I don’t get it either.”

    1. There was an old saying: Curiosity killed the cat. I was just being ironical; cats are excellent learners.

  2. Makes me smile! I used to be told – you ask too many questions! BTW the Aardvark reminded me of that old cartoon when I was a kid. It was very snappy and smart!!

  3. The Ant and the Aardvark! Jackie Mason did the voice of the aardvark; Dean Martin did the voice of the ant. I loved that cartoon!
