Rocky

Today, I didn’t wake up and put down a fresh wee-wee mat. Nor did I wake and intone, “Come on, Rocky, it’s pupperton time, the best time of the day!” Today, no one turned in tight little circles before exploding through the sliding-glass door into the delight of an early spring morning. This morning, I only made breakfast for myself and Kathy.

I know the rainbow bridge is only an imagined realm that we keep in our hearts. And how our hearts ache for a love that taught us more about ourselves than we would have ever learned otherwise, and that is their gift to us, and it’s a gift that only they can give. Last night, lying on my lap, with Kathy beside me, Rocky, who brought us a lifetime of joy, love, energy, mischief, spontaneity, and warmth, drew his last breath. Kathy and I are heartbroken, but we wouldn’t trade away one minute of the sixteen years, six weeks, and one day that Rocky lit up our lives.
