My ’77 Heart Throb

Daily writing prompt
What is your all time favorite automobile?

Yeah, I know, in retrospect, the red and white ’77 Cadillac Eldorado was a classic pimp-mobile. But what can I say? I was fifteen—a tasteless teen who had yet to develop any sense of sophistication.

I grew up in inner-city Philadelphia in a neighborhood whose curbsides were littered primarily with Chevrolets. But my around-the-corner neighbor had the exact vehicle shown in the photograph above. I never actually met the fellow. Moreover, it was rare not to see the vehicle parked in front of his house, and in 1977, no one worked at home unless they had an unorthodox way of making a living. Come to think of it, maybe the sonofabitch was a pimp after all. Nevertheless, I haven’t felt such a strong attraction for an automobile since.

    1. The very next year, 1978, those behemoths started shrinking. Before long, they all looked alike. And not that I long for the days when cars got 12 miles to a gallon, but those classics sure were nice to look at.
