To life!

Daily writing prompt
What are the most important things needed to live a good life?

To exist in a madding world swimming in dysfunction and a list of human failings too long to mention (and those are our species rosier aspects), one must possess a sense of humor, an appreciation for irony, and the wisdom to recognize each as a gift. A bonus would be having a life mate also armed with the capacity to see reconciliations as blessings.

If we cannot laugh at ourselves, our shortcomings (everyone owns more than they admit) and calamities caused by misjudgments won’t just present as momentary lapses but sources of misery. Those without an appreciation for irony tend to make others around them miserable. Those deprived of both a sense of humor and fondness for irony are impoverished and thus insufferable. Liken humor and irony to Dick Whittington’s cat: if you sell it, the rats and mice will come for you. Moreover, most of us won’t lead a life similar to Jane Goodall. We’re stuck with each other; so, it’s best we live, learn, and laugh. Happy Sunday!

  1. Very well put. Recognizing the irony of life and accepting the, at times, insane humor of one’s own existence can be paramount to retain some semblance of sanity. Also, starting the day with a good attitude and acknowledging that we have very little control over what happens for the rest of the day (and our lives), other than our attitude and response to outside events and situations. Having a mate or companion that aligns with that mindset can have long lasting effects. On the flip-side, starting the day with a bad attitude or victim mentality can have a wide spread effect, not only for ourself but for all those around us, family, friends, or strangers alike.

    1. I once heard Larry Elder say: You can’t control the outcome, but you can control the effort. If there was ever rubric to live by it’s that one.
