What’s the greatest gift one could bestow upon another? I could be quite succinct with this one: RESPONSIBILITY. In learning responsibility two things transpire: we grasp the value of what it means to be trustworthy and, as a result, gain confidence we can tackle obstacles the world and its wearing influences will throw our way.
Responsibility tends to occupy the same domain as sacrifice. Sacrificing hedonic tendencies in the present so that our future selves may thrive will produce benefits we cannot quantify. However we obtain the virtues of responsibility and sacrifice, be it over time or in a whirlwind-like gush—for example when a newborn is placed in our arms and, for the first time, we realize we’re not the most important person in the room—they mark the substrata and rubric of a life well lived.
